File Set-up & Templates
File Setup, Check & Templates Guide
Preparing your print files correctly is one of the most important steps in ensuring a smooth production process.
Well-prepared files help avoid delays, reduce revision cycles, and ensure your final product meets expectations in both quality and accuracy. This guide covers everything you need to know β from file setup and formatting to final checks and downloadable templates.
Why File Preparation Matters
File preparation is more than a technical requirement β it directly impacts production efficiency and final print quality.
Printing Errors
Incorrect files can create unexpected printing issues.
Trimming Issues
Misaligned content or poor margins may affectthe final look.
Color Inconsistency
Wrong color mode can lead to unexpected printed colors.
Delays & Extra
Cost Revision cycles can slow production and increase cost.
π Proper file preparation ensures your project moves smoothly from design to production without unnecessary revisions.
Basic File Setup Rules
These are the fundamental requirements for most printing projects.
Setup Item | Requirement |
Bleed & Safe Margin | Add 3mm bleed on all sides. Keep important content within a safe margin, at least 3mm inside the trim line. |
Color Mode | Use CMYK color mode, not RGB. RGB colors may appear different when printed. |
Resolution | Minimum 300 DPI for all images. Low-resolution images may appear blurry or pixelated. |
File Format | Submit files as print-ready PDF. Use single pages, not spreads, unless specified. |
Fonts | Convert fonts to outlines or embed them to avoid missing font issues. |
πΒ Following these basic rules prevents most common printing problems.
Book File Setup
Book files require careful planning, especially for multi-page layouts and binding.
Requirement | Details |
Layout Format | Provide files as multi-page PDF. Each page should be a single page, not spreads. |
Margins & Binding Consideration | Consideration Standard margin: 3mm. For thicker books, increase inner margin to prevent content being too close to the spine. |
Page Count | Saddle stitch books must be in multiples of 4 pages. Perfect bound and hardcover books have more flexibility. |
Additional Notes | Avoid placing important text too close to trim edges. Keep consistent page alignment throughout. |
πΒ Proper book setup ensures accurate binding and clean final appearance.
Card Game File Setup
Card files require precision and consistency to ensure smooth gameplay and professional results.
Requirement | Details |
Card Layout | Each card face should be one page in the PDF. Maintain consistent spacing and alignment. |
Front & Back Setup | If all cards share the same back, place it as the last page. If multiple backs are used, provide a separate file with matching order. |
Safe Area | Keep text and key elements well inside the margin. Avoid placing critical content near edges. |
Important Considerations | Small borders may appear uneven due to cutting tolerance. Avoid ultra-thin lines near edges. |
πΒ Consistency across all cards is critical for professional gameplay experience.
Box & Packaging File Setup
Packaging files require additional attention due to folding structures and die-lines.
Requirement | Details |
Dieline Usage | Use provided dieline templates. Keep design elements inside safe areas. |
Bleed & Flaps | Typical bleed for boxes: ~15β18mm for wrapping areas. Ensure background extends fully into bleed areas. |
Layer Setup | Keep dieline on a separate layer. Hide dieline before exporting final print file. |
πΒ Incorrect packaging files can lead to alignment issues and production delays.
File Check Before Submission
Before submitting your files, review this checklist to avoid common issues.
βBleed correctly added
βSafe margins respected
βCMYK color mode used
βImages are 300 DPI
βFonts outlined or embedded
βPage order correct
βNo missing or hidden elements
βDielines removed from final print file
πΒ A quick file check can prevent costly revisions and delays.
